Out of Florida’s 67 counties, St. Johns ranks as the state’s healthiest county, according to the 2017 County Health Rankings. That’s no small feat! Even more impressive is that this is the sixth year in a row that St. Johns got top marks. Read on to find out how.

How the Rankings Work

The County Health Rankings is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. It ranks each county for six main categories: length of life, quality of life, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment. How well a county performs in each category determines its overall score.

Where St. Johns County Scored Highest

The county ranks first for the quality of life category, which measures the number of people who report having poor health. It also ranks first for social and economic factors. This category looks at education levels and unemployment rates. Most St. Johns County residents — 90 percent — are high school graduates, while 77 percent of residents have some college education. The unemployment rate is 3.9 percent, which is lower than the state average.

The county comes in second for the clinical care category; only 13 percent of residents don’t have health insurance. As for the length of life, St. Johns County ranks third in the state.

What the Scores Mean

Different health aspects are tied closely together, which explains how a county could place first or second in more than one category. Residents with higher education levels are more likely to get a high-paying job, which gives them access to health insurance. Having a higher income also makes it easier to purchase healthy foods. Together, these factors lead to better overall health and a longer life span.
