St. Augustine and Jacksonville Family-Friendly Farms

Down To Earth Farm

Down To Earth Farm Jacksonville Farm

Source: Down To Earth Farm

Family-owned since 2007, the Lapinski family started the Down To Earth Farm because they believe in the importance of vibrant, local, sustainably-grown agriculture. With a passion for improving the health of the local community and the health of the environment, the family grows a variety of vegetables and flowers in a manner that is gentle on the planet.

What exactly does that mean?

This means using compost and OMRI-listed products instead of chemical fertilizers to feed the plants, using organic potting soil, and fighting bugs and disease with responsible techniques such as crop rotation and regular scouting. They use no chemical pesticides or herbicides.

Notes:

Freshfields Farm

When: Mondays – Saturdays 9:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., Sundays 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Where: 5555 University Blvd W, Jacksonville, FL 32216

Family-owned since 1973, Freshfields Farm isn’t a farmers market OR a supermarket. Their mantra is keeping it simple by only offering the freshest produce, meats, seafood, and cheese available. And that’s all.

They receive daily truckloads of meat and produce directly from farms or packing houses rather than distribution warehouses, cutting and packaging most of the meat in-store the same day it’s received. It’s just about the freshest way to get food short of growing or raising it yourself.

Notes:

  • They also have a location in Orlando
  • Closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day
  • Free curbside pickup available
  • Check the live market board online to see what’s available each day
  • They also have an Ice Cream Shoppe on-site selling sandwiches, soft-serve ice cream sundaes, hot dogs, smoked turkey drumsticks, and Pepsi or bottled water

Celestial Farms is a not-for-profit farm animal rescue and educational center that provides sanctuary homes for ponies, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, and other animals. They also have Farmschool Days, volunteer opportunities, private events, and a seasonal market.
