It’s that time of year again in St. Johns County! Classes will resume next week, which means shopping for the kids. From trendy clothes and shoes to much-needed accessories, including backpacks and lunch boxes, plus a plethora of school supplies, St. Johns County has the perfect shopping spots to help you get the shopping done and your kids ready to go back to school.

First off, you may be wondering… Does St. Johns County have required uniforms, specific colors to adhere to with clothing choices, or a general dress code?

No, there are no specific uniforms or colored polos required, but there is a dress code given by the county that students must adhere to. Before you go shopping for new clothes for your children this school year, take a look at the dress code according to the county’s Student Code of Conduct:

St. Johns County School District – Dress Code

All Students in St. Johns County:

  • Personal attire may be in the style of the day. Clothing, piercings, and accessories displaying profanity, violence, discriminatory messages, sexually suggestive phrases, phrases, or symbols of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs is unacceptable.
  • Gang graffiti will not be drawn or worn on backpacks, notebooks, folders, papers, clothing or any other object or on the body of any student or person on school property.
  • Pajamas shall not be worn as exterior clothing on campus.
  • Headgear, including but not limited to, caps, hats, bandanas and/or sunglasses shall not be worn indoors on campus unless permitted by school administration for religious or medical reasons. Students may wear sunglasses, hats, or other sun‐protective wear while outdoors during school hours.
  • Clothing must cover areas from one armpit to the other armpit, down to the mid‐thigh. Tops must have shoulder straps and be long enough to adequately cover the waistline and not expose the midriff.
  • Students must wear shoes that are safe and appropriate for the learning environment. Middle school and elementary school students must wear shoes that have a back or strap on the heel. High school students may wear backless shoes. Bedroom slippers are prohibited.
  • See‐through or mesh garments must be worn with opaque clothing over it or underneath that meets the standard for clothing coverage.
  • Rips or tears in clothing above the mid‐thigh must not expose skin.
  • Any student who attends First Coast Technical College must follow dress code regulations established by each occupational department of FCTC (i.e., safety clothing, protective garments, and business attire).

Standards: Boys

  • Boy’s pants/slacks must be worn at the waist. No boxer shorts or underwear may be visible.
  • Mustaches and beards shall be neatly trimmed.
  • Revealing clothing and pajamas are not acceptable.

Standards: Girls

  • Tops and shirts must cover the entire shoulder and they must be modest and not revealing or distracting. Midriff or “cut-out” dresses and “cut out” tops may not be worn. Extremely short skirts are not allowed. Skirts must be no shorter than four inches (4″) above the top of the knee. Revealing clothing, pajamas and lingerie are not acceptable. Underwear must not be exposed.
  • Hair curlers and excessive make-up shall not be permitted.
  • Girls’ pants/slacks must be worn at the waist. No underwear may be exposed.
